Intermediate - College Prep @ Tawa

Intermediate students are well prepared for their Secondary school years. They receive a thorough grounding in the essential subjects of English and Mathematics, as well as experiencing diverse and exciting learning opportunities.

Students at Tawa School are encouraged to develop important individual skills such as independence, freedom, responsibility as they begin their journey from adolescence to young adults.

Intermediate students who demonstrate responsibility are offered opportunities for further leadership.

Curriculum @ Tawa

Literacy and Numeracy are priorities at Tawa School. The Intermediate teachers liaise with the local colleges to ensure that our students are academically well prepared for the Y8-9 transition.

At Tawa School, Intermediate students are in smaller classes, usually about twenty or so students. Students are taught by caring, committed teachers in warm, friendly, safe class and school environments.

Tawa School has always encouraged parents to be interested and involved in their child’s education.

At Tawa School all intermediate students have the opportunity to join in the full extra curricular programme.

Intermediate students have the option of joining the City Class (ref. ‘City Class @ Tawa’) or remaining ‘on site’ studying at school and in the local community for example, regular use of the public library and local technology specialists.

EOTC @ Tawa

Education outside the class is designed to challenge and extend our students, giving many experiences to learn in other environments and opportunities to work as a team.

SUMMER CAMP Bridge Valley, Nelson.
The amazing instructors and facilities make this a camp not to be missed. Students will take part in challenges and team building activities such as:
Water slide, flying foxes, go-carts, shooting, abseiling, archery, high ropes, horse riding, orienteering course, swimming, kayaking, mini-golf, basketball and table tennis.

WINTER CAMP Mt Ruapehu, Raetahi.
Not just a ski trip! Students experience a range of activities including:
Skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, Tokaanu Hot Pools, Waiouru War Museum

OVERNIGHTERS
Extend learning through overnight stays at places like:
Wellington Zoo
Kapiti Island

Technology @ Tawa

Technology programmes are designed to offer “hands on” experiences with contemporary technologies that students will
encounter in their lives.

Technology weeks at Tawa School revolve around a diverse, 2-year programme based on the principles of construction,
food, and information and communication technologies.

Experts organised by FutureInTech, a government initiative to promote careers in science, technology, and
engineering, support many of the courses offered.

ICT
The information and communication technology programmes allow students to:
Get creative with GarageBand; compose original music and record it on CD/DVD
Use state-of-the-art Lego Robotics to programme and control vehicles of your own design
Design and build your own web page

CONSTRUCTION
Study structures and mechanisms involved in:
Kite design/construction (aerodynamics)
Clock design/construction
Screen-printing

FOOD TECHNOLOGY
Not just about eating food, but also what goes into that food, and the processes involved:
(Bio Tech) Use bread making machines to bake fresh, tasty loaves
(Bio Tech) Conduct white powder experiments with ESR scientist Dr. Sarah Kenworthy
(Cooking Tech) Plan and cater to run your own “Thursday Café”

Arts @ Tawa

Arts programmes allow students to express their learning through other mediums and extend their talent.

All Intermediate students at Tawa School have the opportunity to take part in a variety of musical,
performing and visual arts.

Groups cater for learners just wanting to ‘try it out’ to extension groups for more able performers.

Specialist tutors are employed to take many of these groups. Tutors and groups are supported by
many skilled, passionate and dedicated teachers.

There are many opportunities to perform, including school performances, choir, music and kapahaka festivals, and
the annual Arts and Sports Exchange with Havelock North Primary School.
